MONICA LEVY | NEITHER HERE NOR THERE
JULY 22-29
MR MINTY’S Shop 2/12 Macleay St, Elizabeth Bay NSW 2011
Australian-born artist Monica Levy explores themes of identity, displacement, and anxiety through a selection of abstract paintings imbued with the artist’s own experience of exile and her life amongst a city of exiles, Berlin.
Her works draw a parallel between the sense of unease triggered by the geographical dislocation of her previous years in Berlin, and the confusion and trauma resulting from the radical disruption to our global social fabric, which began in the early months of 2020 and continues.
The landscapes depicted in her works are fictional. They can be read as transitional states between people, land, and cultures, incorporating recurring themes of dislocation, anxiety, and memory.
Oscillating between sensory and intellectual, Levy’s landscapes find their shared base in the recurring element of water, the fundamental communicative medium for her reductive process.
